Friends By Their Side

2026, Acrylic on canvas

Dylan Bauer has been an Artist-in-Residence with Art with a Heart in Healthcare for seven years. He has been creating for as long as he can remember and is drawn to realism, particularly watercolor and acrylic. His work often centers on animals, nature, and meaningful moments, with an emphasis on detail and creating pieces that make people feel something.

Friends by Their Side brings together the real stuffed companions Dylan has encountered through years of creating with patients, connecting his personal artistic practice with the comfort he hopes to create through his work as an Artist-in-Residence.

In His Own Words

What has art meant to you personally?

I’ve been creating art for as long as I can remember, and it has always been a passion of mine. Art has become a safe place for me. I can express my thoughts, emotions, and experiences freely without fear of judgment.

What drew you to Art with a Heart in Healthcare?

I’ve always had a fear of hospitals, and this program gave me a way to turn that fear into something positive by using art to help others feel more comfortable.

What are you most drawn to in your own art?

I’m drawn to realism, especially watercolor and acrylic, and I love creating animals, nature, and meaningful moments. I’d say my style is pretty versatile. I love experimenting with different mediums and styles, but I’m very detail-oriented and enjoy creating art that has meaning and makes people feel something.

Tell us about Friends by Their Side.

This piece features stuffed animals I’ve drawn throughout my time with the program. One special thing I do is create portraits of these beloved companions while a patient is away for a procedure, then surprise them by placing the portrait beside their stuffed animal when they return.

I chose this subject because these stuffed animals can be a source of comfort and friendship for patients during their hospital stay.

What do you hope viewers take away from the piece?

I hope viewers see how something simple can bring comfort, happiness, and a sense of safety during a difficult time.
